Author Spotlight: Annabel Fanning!

Selfie.jpgAnnabel Fanning is a British-born, Australian-based writer and full-time cat enthusiast. When she's not indulging in her love of writing, she likes to paint her nails, shop and wander off into nature — not necessarily in that order.


She began writing songs as a child, the most memorable of which was entitled: "Tropical Night in Switzerland". Throughout her teens, songwriting was the most rebellious form of expression that she was willing to partake in (no tattoos, drugs, or biker boys) and her love for storytelling developed. There was just one problem: music wasn't her passion. A month before her 20th birthday whilst sitting under the Californian sun a few deck chairs down from Robert Pattinson, inspiration struck, and Annabel began writing her first novel. The years flew by and now at 26, Annabel has written a handful of novels, which she plans on releasing throughout 2015/16. She'd really like it if you read them.

 There are a lot of things that I liked about this book but let me tell you three things that I loved the most about it.

1. That uber hot chemistry between Francesca and Rafael. Seriously.
No one who has read this book could ever deny how sparks fly between these two. They are like fire and ice..or maybe ice cream and bacon. Others can never see them being together and yet, when they do, they truly complement each other. Yep, I totally compared them to food, no judging.

2. Their world's got skills...magical skills
The world they live in has some magical skills worth knowing, may it be of the physical, mental or adaptive skills. I absolutely want to be a healer, or have Rafael's mad skills of observation and projection. There were a lot of skills that I wish to see more as this series progresses.

3. The mysterious Minna
Yep. I am really curious about her. She was introduced into the book as the crux throwing Frankie and Rafa together as they figure out what happened during their "graduation". They were then thrust into a sticky situation of Minna's doing. As they came across the young lady, Frankie and Rafa came to realize that Minna has a power that can change and impact the whole Cadabra race. Color me excited and I can't wait to see what Minna would do next.

Get Real is definitely a good start to a promising series. I'll definitely be on the lookout for the next book.

Soundtrack of our Breakup

 My second baby Songs of Our Breakup is out! *jumpshot* I’ve been hearing lovely things from the handful of people who’ve read it, and one common comment is that the book needs a soundtrack. Well, it kind of does have a soundtrack. Unofficially, that is.

Writing for me usually requires a vacuum. But sometimes, writing requires a playlist.

It made sense that I needed music to write a story about an indie rock band, taking on the task of penning lyrics for the first time ever. I was ambitious, I know. But it was super fun. The words came to me at the oddest moments. The lyrics to Slipstream for one, got into my head while I was waiting for the train at Ayala Station. By the time I got off at Quezon Avenue, the song’s first draft was complete.

The point is sometimes we need noise. A pounding drumbeat, a metallic guitar riff, or just some good old rock and roll.

Below are some (vintage) songs that accompanied me while I was deep inside my writer’s hole for Songs of Our Breakup.
